 Karnak

Pastel

Karnak is one of the bores on Wirraminna station in the north west of South Australia. This work depicts the changing features of the landscape from the blue bush plains in the foreground to the Myall scrub in the distance.

 Pipeline to Red Lake

Pastel

Much of the water on Wirraminna station is gravity fed sometimes for 50-60kms, through black poly pipe to tanks to troughs so that the cattle can drink. This work shows the pipe crossing the red drift sand near Red Lake and the road that the cattle also use for access

  Sunset on the Wirraminna Scrub

Pastel

After sketching and painting all day in the sandhills near Wirraminna South I kept noticing the spectacular effects of the setting sun through the scrub. After completing a quick composition sketch I managed to get a good photo to help capture the light's rays as they brushed down through the trees.

Over the Hills and Far Away

Pastel

This work is done from the same drift sand as "pipeline to Red Lake". As I was sketching I kept getting the illusion that the top of the dune was like a wall that the cattle would seem to be walking over.

 Sand Mounds

Pastel

Looking back towards Red Lake from the red drift sand a natural composition presented itself. This piece was completed in the light of early morning which highlighted the sand mounds built up around the trees and bushes.

 Island Lagoon Vista

Pastel

Island Lagoon can be seen from the Stuart Highway 20kms south of Pimba and 20kms west. In this work I was trying to emphasise the great distance and depth in the scene and the freshness of the tableland vegetation after rain.

 Wirraminna Tablelands

Pastel

Using the stretch of tablelands between Pimba and Wirraminna as the subject for this drawing, my attention turned to the great range of colours in the pthalo blue sky and the exaggeration of the depth shown in the structure of the clouds.

After the Fire Rum Jungle NT

Oil

I had become increasing intrigued by the casual acceptance of bushfires in the Territory and indeed the ground swell of opinion that they were a necessary fact of life. This painting was completed within a few weeks of a large fire in the area north of the old Rum Jungle mine and demonstrated the resilience of the native vegetation to the fires.

 Pekina Creek Reservoir

Oil

Painted at the Southern end of the reservoir after several good seasons had kept the reservoir full for about five years. No longer used as a town water supply the reservoir provides an excellent environment for birds and wildlife as well as a casual recreation spot for locals and visitors to Orroroo.

Island Lagoon - The Western Tip

Pastel

This scene can be accessed from the main road looking back over the Wirraminna sandhills and the western edge of Island Lagoon. The texture of the tableland vegetation, in particular the bluebush was my main objective in this work. The contrast against the lake and the sandhills in the distance work to compliment each other. My interest in the tableland country is in the remarkable resilience that it has and the diversity of eco-systems that this ancient land supports.

 Pine Creek - Northern Territory

Oil

The first time that I had driven to Darwin I stopped in at this spot in between Katherine and Adelaide River after a friend had shown me some photographs of this area. The serenity was amazing along with the colours and textures that framed this spectacular composition.

 Wirraminna Ambience

Pastel

This work is a representation of much of the transition country of Wirraminna where the land varies from the distinct tableland vegetation to incorporate some of the scrubland trees and bushes.

 North Cliff

Oil

This painting represents the transition country on the northern boundary of Wirraminna in the Woomera restricted area. Overlooking Lake Hanson, the scene shows all of the amazing natural features of the tablelands, the eroded cliffs and the sand country alongside the lakes edge.

 Jubilee Creek Mutooroo SA

Oil

This scene was based on a photo from Peter Absalom which depicts his Land Cruiser steadily progressing through the overflow. The bank on the right mid-ground was man-made which helped to compound the flooding in this situation. In contrast, the left hand side is settled and serene and untouched by the flood that had flashed down the Jubilee Creek. The light from the rear created an intriguing force on the colours in the painting and enhanced the bright colours of the wet sand in the foreground, compared to the light washed tones of the galah ravished gum trees in the background

 Summer at Jim's Well

Pastel

While driving to Alice each and every fortnight in the early 1980’s it was surprising when I returned in 2004 to find this country so dry by comparison to the good seasons I had seen it in before. The colours however were still rich and full of character as I have tried to show in this work.

 Robinson's Camp Frome Downs Station

Oil

Lakeside is on Frome Downs Station and was used as a camp for the many rabbit shooters that used to work in the area. The Robinson brothers, Ritchie, Alec and John were known for their "make Shift" camps and this was probably one of their better sites.

 Myall trees Palpina South

Pastel

First sitting for this work was done near Cattle tanks south west of Wirraminna homestead, while the work was completed on a similar group of myalls near the Palpina south track.

The Rabbitters Camp

Oil

This painting reflects a rabbit shooters camp in the early seventies on Frome Downs station. The huge rains in 1974 often left the claypans full and the roads a quagmire. The dog in the foreground was mine and spent most of his time hunting rabbits in and around the camp. The object of his attention can be seen in the bottom left hand side of the painting.

Orroroo Panorama

Acrylic

Over the 22 years that I lived in Orroroo in the upper mid-north of South Australia, I became very attached to the community in many aspects. For 10 years I was secretary and president of the golf club and spent many hours working on the course built in and around the Pekina Creek. Orroroo Panorama was painted over the six months of autumn and winter and shows the area of the 12th and 13th fairways although I left direct references to the golf course out of the picture. My vantage point was the 10th tee which gave me a great view from the Oladie ranges on the left, to the Black Rock hills on the right.

Scrub Kangaroos

Oil

This painting is based on the bluebush scrub similar to the 'Karnak' perspective. The kangaroos are plentiful through the scrub and often travel great distances in their search for fresh 'pickings'.

 *** NEW ***

Wirraminna South

Oil

This painting shows the amazing diversity of the landform and vegetation in Wirraminna South with the relentless sand dunes indispersed with small salt lakes. This painting was modelled from the edge of Lake Gairdner looking back towards the east. Sand, saltbush, mallee, mulga, bullock bush, black oaks and western myalls all have their own environs within the landscape.
